Proposed road closure – Stott Hill, Cathedral Quarter: Any views?

Comments are still welcome on proposals to close Stott Hill (next to Bradford Cathedral) to through traffic – but as soon as possible please.

Bradford Council is concerned that traffic volumes will increase beyond a reasonable amount as it plans to make Church Bank¬† ‘bus/taxi only’ in advance of Westfield opening.

While concerns have been previously raised about Stott Hill rat-runs, restricted access on Church Bank would create problems for some motorists (e.g. getting onto Bolton Road).

Proposals include:

– a ‘point closure’ part-way along Stott Hill, taking traffic along Wellington St, Wellesley St and Priestley St before reaching Bolton Rd

– buses and taxis only on Church Bank

– allowing a right-turn from Anne Gate onto Barkerend Road.

Initial business concerns are that access to the city centre is ‘twice removed’ with this scheme, visitors and others unfamiliar with the city will be either confused or put off visiting again, traffic volumes in Little Germany will increase and more rat runs are created.

The Chamber’s Local Affairs Committee discussed the plan earlier this month (July) and a response to the proposal is currently in draft.¬† A map of the planned changes is available here.

The Chamber was previously responsible for getting Bradford Council to re-open Church Bank when it had been closed for ‘free traffic’ several years ago before the delays to Westfield’s construction.
