New short course gives students head start

An exciting new course designed to give potential students a taste of college life has been launched by Bradford College.

Get Ahead is a free course created for 16 to 18-year-olds who are considering starting a college course in September or simply want to boost their employability skills to help them get a job.

Aimed primarily at teenagers not currently in education, training or employment the course will give those taking part a chance to improve the skills that employers are looking for and will give students starting College in the future a head start.

The course will focus on developing vocational skills and students will undertake an internship placement with employers.

Everyone who successfully completes the course gets a recognised qualification and also a guaranteed place on a full-time course at the college starting this September.

The course, which can be started in April, May or June, as well as giving participants valuable work experience will also develop teamwork, presentation and enterprise skills.

A college spokesperson said: “This programme will be tailor made and focus on the career interest of the individual student

“It suits anyone wanting to get back into learning and improve their study skills and levels of qualification in order to progress onto a full-time programme of study or into a job.

“With courses starting monthly it means students don’t have to wait until the traditional September start date for courses. They can sign up and get a head start on their chosen career pathway now.

“Every student enrolling will benefit from appropriate advice and guidance prior to starting the course and undertake a skills assessment to see if they could benefit from any additional academic support.

“They also get the opportunity to join the Bradford College+ (Plus) scheme, which develops the skills, attitudes and values that employers want.”

Courses start on April 3, May 1 and June 1 and require learners to be in college for 30-hours a week over four days, from 9am to 3pm.

Applications can be made via the Bradford College website or by calling FE Student Recruitment 01274 433333.
