Dynamic West Yorkshire company Acorn Stairlifts has been shortlisted in two categories for the 2016 UK Private Business Awards.
Now in their sixth year, these prestigious national awards recognise success and achievement within the vast number of private businesses in the UK. They are sponsored by the world’s largest professional services firm Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC).
Steeton-based Acorn Stairlifts has reached the final seven in the running for the International Business of the Year Award and the final six for the keynote Private Business of the Year Award. Each year the awards attract thousands of entries from across the UK, competing in 10 categories.
Founded in 1992, Acorn Stairlifts remains a privately-owned company which now employs around 1,400 people worldwide. Manufacturing more than 50,000 straight and curved stairlifts per year, it has a UK-wide network of surveyors and installers. In addition, it has wholly-owned subsidiaries operating in Ireland, Belgium, Italy, France, Germany, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and in the USA, where it is the market leader for stairlifts. Few, if any other, UK companies have achieved this level of success in the USA.
Acorn’s head offices and curved stairlift manufacturing facility are based on Steeton’s Millennium Business Park, with a second factory in Shipley and a third in Scotland. From these busy plants Acorn’s award-winning made in the UK stairlifts are exported to 82 countries. Somewhere in the world an Acorn Stairlift is installed every eight minutes.
Gordon Singer, from UK Private Business Awards sponsor PwC, said: “The shortlist showcases the very best of the companies who have entered from across the country and recognises the fantastic achievements of entrepreneurs, their businesses and their teams. Privately owned businesses are the backbone of our economy, both locally and more widely across the UK. We are passionate about supporting and celebrating their successes.”
A total of 10 Yorkshire-based businesses have reached this year’s national shortlist, but Acorn is the only one featured in two categories and one of only two businesses nationally to “do the double”.
Dave Belmont, Acorn Stairlifts company secretary, commented: “The whole team at Acorn is thrilled to have made it to the final shortlist in these two categories. They recognise both our success and continued growth as a UK private business and our achievements as a British manufacturer exporting its goods and operating in overseas markets.”
The winners will be announced at a glittering Awards Evening taking place in London on Thursday September 15th.
